Film Studies: Sample Article Searches

Middlesex Community College libraries offer students in Film Studies and related disciplines access to numerous resources. Use the tabs below to locate books, articles, websites and citation help.

Database Search Strategies for Film

Literature Resource Center

The Literature Resource Center database is worth checking for more scholarly film criticism, especially for book into movie titles like Gone with the Wind or timeless/well known films like Bonnie and Clyde

The Keyword Search is the widest search possible and gives you the most results.  Notice that you can click on the tabs or use the dropdowns in the search box to narrow your search to Works Search (Bonnie and Clyde) or Person Search for characters, actors, and others ( ie: directors) in the movie.

EBSCO Databases

EBSCO databases allow you to search a wide variety of disciplines such as psychology, sociology, history, literature and art: fields that are all relevant to the study of film.

When you find an article that is relevant, look at the terms that were used to index it. These terms are listed in the “Refine your results” section at the left margin of the screen, or underneath the summary (abstract) of the article. Try using these terms : motion pictures, film criticism  to find more relevant  articles.   Notice that you can limit your search further by checking off Full Text or the Peer Reviewed box in the “Refine your Results” section.
